This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The threats facing Surrey and Sussex are constantly evolving, and offenders continually find new ways of committing crime. The information needed to confront these risks is not always evident. That’s why we need Intelligence Analysts to help make sense of what’s going on and direct our response to some of the most complex and high profile cases in our counties.
We are looking for people who can identify connections from big data sets and evolving intelligence. You will have to ask insightful questions to get to the heart of a problem. You’ll identify, interrogate, and assess information from a range of covert and overt information sources. You will have to get to grips with complex and technical problems, explain your thinking, and come up with creative solutions to help tackle crime.
You will be working on a variety of critical, strategic, and high risk incidents. At times you will be under pressure to build a big picture from small pieces of intelligence and threads of data. You will be flexible and creative, and able to communicate your findings to front-line staff and chief officers. Your problem-solving, attention to detail, and presentational skills will be crucial in making people safe and locking up criminals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Intelligence Analysts provide sophisticated analysis that supports officers and staff in effective decision making around complex problems. This is critical when policing is being asked to do more with less, and where accurate information and persuasive judgement needs to reach the right people quickly. The context will vary according to the specific role, ranging from problem solving, volume crime and anti-social behaviour, to organised crime, counter-terrorism, homicide and other serious crime and strategic issues.
You will advise and assist in all aspects of investigations by providing strategic and tactical analysis of intelligence, evidence, crime, and disorder. You will identify offenders, series and trends, and information gaps. You will suggest opportunities to gather intelligence and evidence, prevent or disrupt crime, progress investigations, solve problems or otherwise reduce threat, harm and risk.
Please note that due to the nature of this job, there will be times you may be exposed to investigations of a distressing nature.
Skills & Experience
We are looking for candidates with the following essential skills and experience. We will assess your application against these specific criteria, which should be clearly evidenced within your application form:
- Graduate calibre or equivalent qualification, or with proven and well evidenced experience of crime/intelligence analysis in a relevant field;
- A high standard of problem solving skills;
- Well-developed computer skills including the ability to learn bespoke systems, and design and develop recording and analysis frameworks by using databases, spreadsheets and other analytical tools;
- The ability to use logic and reasoning to influence others in a professional manner, to persuade people by using powerful arguments; identifying clear aims in negotiations and achieving satisfactory outcomes;
- Previous experience of interpreting and evaluating large sets of qualitative and quantitative data to extract salient points, develop inferences, and make recommendations;
- Well-developed communication skills both written and verbal, and the ability to present appropriately to groups or individuals, including senior managers and partner agencies;
- The ability to plan ahead, to manage and prioritise their workload unsupervised and respond flexibly to rapidly changing demands;
- The post-holder must take personal responsibility for their actions and for resolving issues or problems that arise, being focused on achieving high quality results and developing skills and knowledge;
- The ability to work calmly and effectively, especially under pressure;
- A flexible approach towards achieving team objectives and a willingness to undertake a wide range of duties.

In addition to current vacancies, this recruitment process is for a pool of candidates who may subsequently be offered positions arising across Surrey and Sussex for a period of up to 9 months.
The ability to travel and provide on call cover overnight and at weekends on a rota basis is a requirement of most roles. You will also be willing and able to attain Intelligence Professionalisation Programme (IPP) certification in line with the role. On completion of the IPP you will progress to the next salary band which is: Surrey Police £35,028 – 41, 464 and Sussex Police £38,007 – £41,928.
