The skills and knowledge you gain will improve your chances of a future role within the Airbus and should benefit your future studies.The Portsmouth Mechanical Design Office (MDO) supports the Telecom satellites Business Unit to layout all equipment and create the RF connectivity design (Waveguides, coaxial cables) within our Eurostar spacecraft product line.Our mission is to layout the payload equipment in 3D, and to produce detailed routing and design of the RF interconnections, including stress and thermal justification.
In conjunction with Assembly, Integration and Test department, we produce the definition of the payload assembly kitting, installation drawings and bill of materials to allow them to smoothly assemble our satellites in the quickest and most effective ways. We also create the testing definition and detailed design to support the testing activities.As part of the MDO, the Stress and Thermal Group performs detailed hand calculations and Finite Element (FE) analyses of waveguides, equipment and ancillaries to validate their uses for space flight.
We are engaged in the transformation of our company as a part of the journey to Industry 4.0, supporting the digitalization exercise, as a key actor in the product digitalization and data continuity.
The Stress & Thermal Automation intern will work closely with colleagues at our Stevenage, Toulouse and Friedrichshafen sites to adapt and improve our processes to meet this goal.
The nature of the role requires a candidate who is self-motivated, and unafraid to ask the questions necessary to get up to speed in the fast paced and dynamic environment of the Mechanical Design Office.

Tasks & accountabilities
During this internship, the activities you may undertake will include;Become familiar with our FE methodsHelp develop automation of our complete mechanical & thermal FEA processWrite scripts, macros and routines to ensure that the outputs from one analysis process serve as the input to another.As part of our Simulation Lifecycle Management (SLM), help configure and customize our new integration software tool, within the 3Dexperience tool from Dassault.Guidance and supervision will always be available, but you will be given a large degree of autonomy and responsibility to develop the project in your own way.This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Companys success, reputation and sustainable growth.

Please note our Internships are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;Mechanical engineering or Aerospace engineering backgroundAn aptitude in software programming (for example VBA, python, C++, )An understanding of FEA (Finite Element Analysis) methodsGood team player, self-driven and motivatedStrong written and verbal communication skillsMS Office (including VBA macros)Please ensure that a covering letter detailing motivations and suitability for this position is included in your application.The successful candidate will be subject to UK National Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs.
